What Students Need to Do: Students arrange measurements or observations in tables, charts, or graphs. They look for trends and use data as evidence for a possible relationship between two variables.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students keep paired data together, label variables and units, and choose a clear way to display the values. They identify increasing, decreasing, or absent patterns and explain what the data can support.
Common Misconceptions: Students may separate paired values when sorting, leave axes unlabeled, or claim a pattern from one unusual result. They may also assume that a relationship proves one variable caused the other.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Graph these ramp height and car distance pairs: 15 cm and 73 cm, 5 cm and 42 cm, 20 cm and 91 cm, 10 cm and 58 cm. Describe the relationship in one sentence.

Lesson moves

Have pairs test toy cars on three ramp heights, record travel distances, then organize the results in a table and graph.
Show a scatterplot of sunlight hours and plant height, then ask students to write one supported claim and one unanswered question.
Give teams shuffled data cards to pair, sort, and graph, then award a point for each accurately described pattern.
Use weekly temperature and electricity-use data to discuss how organized records can reveal relationships that help families plan energy use.
