What Students Need to Do: Students group observations by a clear feature. They record the results with objects, marks, pictures, or a simple graph that matches what they observed.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can place each item in the correct group and record every item once. Their chart or graph clearly shows how many are in each group.
Common Misconceptions: Students may change the sorting rule halfway through or place one item in two groups. They may skip items, count items twice, or draw symbols that represent different amounts.
How to Assess It: Give students six picture cards showing red and yellow leaves. Ask them to sort the cards and make a picture graph showing how many leaves are each color.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a tray of leaves to sort by color, then build matching cube towers and draw the towers on grid paper.
Show a class weather chart and ask students which symbol fits today and where it belongs.
Play Graph It: students draw animal cards, place one counter in the matching column, and check that every card is recorded.
Survey how classmates traveled to school, then make a picture graph with one name card for each student.
