What Students Need to Do
- Students sort a data set into categories and choose a clear way to display the results. They create pictographs and bar graphs with titles, labels, equal scales, and accurate totals.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a graph that matches every value in the data set. They can explain what each symbol or bar represents and compare categories using the graph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count one pictograph symbol as one item even when the key shows another value. They may use uneven bar graph scales, omit labels, or draw bars that do not match the data.
How to Assess It
- Give students the data: apples 8, bananas 4, oranges 6. Ask them to create a labeled bar graph using a scale of two and write one comparison.
