What Students Need to Do: Students use the title, labels, key, and scale to find amounts shown in a graph. They compare categories and answer questions using the data.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly identify totals, greatest and least amounts, and differences between categories. They explain an answer by pointing to a bar, symbol, label, or key.
Common Misconceptions: Students may count symbols without checking the key or count grid lines instead of intervals. They may mix up category labels, overlook the graph title, or choose the tallest bar without reading the question.
How to Assess It: Give students a pictograph and bar graph showing the same pet survey. Ask, “How many more students chose dogs than fish, and what graph evidence proves it?”

Lesson moves

Have pairs use linking cubes to build bars from a five-day weather tally, then label and compare the bars.
Show a snack pictograph and ask, “Which snack should the class buy most of, and what data supports your answer?”
Play Graph Detective with question cards asking students to find totals, differences, greatest amounts, and least amounts on posted graphs.
Survey classmates about playground choices, make a bar graph, and use the results to recommend one new piece of equipment.
