What Students Need to Do: Students read bar and line graphs, compare values, and describe patterns or changes. They use graph evidence to answer questions and draw reasonable conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify exact values, greatest and least values, differences, and changes over time. They explain conclusions using numbers, labels, scales, and trends from the graph.
Common Misconceptions: Students may ignore the scale, confuse bar height with value, or treat spaces between bars as data. They may read a line graph as separate categories instead of change over time.
How to Assess It: Give students one bar graph and one line graph. Ask them to state one comparison, one trend, and the graph evidence for each answer.

Lesson moves

Have groups measure plant heights, build a bar graph with sticky notes, and compare the tallest, shortest, and difference in heights.
Display a weekly temperature line graph and ask, "What changed, when did it change most, and what numbers prove your claim?"
Play Graph Detective with question cards asking for exact values, differences, highest points, lowest points, and trends on posted graphs.
Use a graph of cafeteria lunch choices to decide which meal should be prepared most and justify the choice with data.
