What Students Need to Do: Students sort and count collected information, then choose a pictograph or bar graph to show it. They add a clear title, labels, equal bar spacing, and a key or scale so others can read the display.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a small data table, a student creates an accurate graph with every count represented correctly. The student uses the graph to identify the most, least, equal amounts, and differences between categories.
Common Misconceptions: Students may ignore the pictograph key, count axis lines instead of intervals, draw uneven bars, or leave out labels. They may also make pictures or bars match object size rather than the number counted.
How to Assess It: Give students this data: dogs 6, cats 4, fish 2. Ask them to make a pictograph where each symbol represents two students, then name the most popular pet.

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort colored counters, tally each color, and build a bar graph with linking cubes on labeled category cards.
Show two graphs of the same class data, one accurate and one mislabeled, and ask students to explain which is trustworthy.
Play Graph Match: students pair data cards with matching pictograph and bar graph cards, then justify each match to a partner.
Survey the class about playground choices, graph the results, and use the graph to recommend which equipment should be available at recess.
