Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students turn observations or test results into a labeled pictograph or bar graph. They compare values, answer questions, and decide whether an object met its goal.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can make an accurate graph with a title, category labels, scale, and key when needed. They can cite values from the graph and use test results to explain whether a tool worked as planned.
Common Misconceptions: Students may count each picture as one even when the key gives another value. They may ignore the graph scale or decide a tool worked after only one successful trial.
How to Assess It: Give students this table: bridge A held 4 cubes, B held 7, and C held 5. Ask them to draw a bar graph and identify which bridge met a goal of 6 cubes.

Lesson moves

Use droppers to test how many drops three paper towel samples absorb, then graph the results.
Show a pictograph with a key of two votes per symbol and ask, “Which claim does the data support, and why?”
Play Graph Detective: teams answer comparison cards using posted graphs, earning a point only when they cite numbers.
