What Students Need to Do

Students record observations with pictures, drawings, or short notes. They sort objects by one physical property and organize results in tables, picture graphs, or object graphs. They identify patterns and compare groups using words such as more, fewer, greater than, less than, and equal to.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can sort a set of objects using one clear rule, such as color, size, shape, or texture. The student can create or read a simple graph and make an accurate comparison based on the data.

Common Misconceptions

Students may change the sorting rule midway or sort by an object's use instead of one physical property. They may count graph symbols incorrectly or assume the tallest group has the greatest objects. They also may confuse fewer with greater than or use equal when counts are close but not the same.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Give students six pictured buttons in three colors. Ask them to sort the buttons by color, complete an object graph, and write one comparison using fewer or equal to.

   Give pairs a mixed button tray, then have them sort by one property, make an object graph, and draw one comparison.

   Show a class picture graph and ask, “What pattern do you notice, and what evidence from the graph supports your idea?”

   Play Graph Detective: teams answer cards using more, fewer, greater than, less than, or equal to, then explain how they know.

   Track the week's weather with picture symbols, then compare sunny, cloudy, and rainy days and write one pattern.
