What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students record what they notice using a picture, labeled drawing, or short sentence. They share the record and explain which details came from their observation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student includes accurate details such as color, size, shape, number, or change. The student can use the record to tell a partner what was observed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw what they expected to see instead of what they observed. They may leave out labels, add imagined details, or give an opinion such as “pretty” instead of evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show students a leaf for one minute. Ask them to draw and label two details, then explain one detail to a partner.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs an ice cube on a tray to observe, then have them draw and label changes after five minutes.
Ask, “Which details in your drawing show what you actually observed?” and have students explain their evidence to a partner.
Play Observation Match by having students pair object photographs with accurate student drawings and explain each match.
Observe the daily weather through a window, then add a drawing and one descriptive word to a class weather chart.
