What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students collect details from an object, event, or investigation and record what they notice. They organize the information and explain what their record shows.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create an accurate picture, drawing, number record, or simple graph from their observations. They can describe one clear finding and answer questions about their record.

Common Misconceptions

Students may draw what they expected instead of what they observed. They may leave out labels, use pictures of different sizes, or confuse the greatest amount with the least amount.

How to Assess It

Show four red cubes and two blue cubes. Ask students to make a picture graph, label each color, and complete: “There are more ___ cubes.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs mixed buttons to sort, count, graph with sticky notes, and explain which group has the most.

  2. Show two photos of a seedling taken days apart and ask, “What changed?” Students respond with a labeled drawing and one sentence.

  3. Play Graph Match by having students pair object cards with the correct picture graph, then explain each match to a partner.

  4. Tally classmates’ fruit choices at lunch, make a class graph, and report the most and least common choices.
