What Students Need to Do: Students notice specific details about an object or event, then share what they noticed. They use spoken words, a clear drawing, or both to record visible changes and features.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student draws recognizable details that match the object or event. The student can describe those details aloud, such as, “The ice got smaller and made a puddle.”
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw what they expected instead of what they observed. They may give opinions, such as “It is pretty,” rather than details about color, shape, size, texture, or change.
How to Assess It: Give each student a leaf and say, “Look closely, draw two details you notice, then tell me one thing you observed.”

Lesson moves

Have students observe an ice cube for five minutes, draw it before and after, then describe the changes to a partner.
Show a classroom plant and ask, “What details could you draw so someone else would recognize this plant?”
Play Mystery Object by having one student describe an object’s visible details while classmates choose it from three objects.
Create a daily weather report where students draw the sky and tell the class what they observed outside.
