What Students Need to Do: Students use their senses and simple tools to notice details during an investigation. They record what they find with drawings, labels, tally marks, or class charts.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can describe specific features such as color, size, texture, or number. The student records findings that match the object or event observed.
Common Misconceptions: Students may report guesses or opinions instead of details they can observe. They may think observing means only looking, or draw what they expected rather than what they found.
How to Assess It: Give each student two leaves and ask them to draw and label one detail about each leaf. Check that both recorded details match the leaves.

Lesson moves

Give pairs hand lenses, four leaves, and a chart for recording each leaf’s color, shape, and texture.
Show two classroom objects and ask, “What details can we observe, and which statements are only guesses?”
Play Observation Bingo by having students find objects that match picture clues for color, texture, shape, and size.
Track the weather outside for five days using picture symbols, then count and compare sunny, cloudy, and rainy days.
