What Students Need to Do: Students notice details using their senses, then say what they think will happen next. They give a simple reason based on what they observed.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student makes a reasonable prediction before an event or test. The student points to an observed detail that supports the prediction.
Common Misconceptions: Students may describe what already happened instead of predicting what comes next. They may also guess without using evidence, or think every prediction must be correct.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a dark cloud above a playground. Ask, “What might happen next, and what do you see that makes you think so?”

Lesson moves

Place ice cubes in sun and shade, have students observe them, then predict which cube will melt first and explain why.
Show the first two pictures in a simple sequence, then ask students to draw and explain what they think happens next.
Play Prediction Bag by revealing one object at a time, then having students predict the next object from the visible pattern.
Observe the class weather chart, then have students predict tomorrow’s weather using patterns from the past week.
