What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe objects and choose one visible or measurable feature, such as color, shape, texture, size, or weight. They use only that feature to make groups or put objects in order, then state the rule they followed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort a mixed set so every object fits the stated rule. The student can also arrange objects consistently, such as shortest to longest, and explain the order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may switch rules midway, placing some objects by color and others by shape. They may use personal preferences instead of physical properties or arrange sizes in an inconsistent order.
How to Assess It
- Give each student six craft sticks in three colors and three lengths. Say, “Group them by color, then mix them and arrange them from shortest to longest.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs shells, buttons, and blocks to sort by one chosen feature, then label each group with its sorting rule.
Ask, “Could the same objects be sorted a different way?” Have students draw two groups and write the property they used.
Play Mystery Sort: one student groups picture cards by one property while classmates infer the rule from the groups.
Have students organize classroom books by height and explain how this arrangement helps someone find or store them.
