What Students Need to Do: Students use sight and safe touch to notice an object's color, shape, size, texture, and material. They choose traits to examine, then draw, label, sort, or compare what they observe.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can describe an unfamiliar object with several accurate, observable details. The student can sort objects by one stated property and record the results with pictures or words.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give opinions or guesses, such as “pretty” or “old,” instead of observable facts. They may name an object rather than describe it, or change the sorting rule halfway through.
How to Assess It: Give each student a cotton ball and a craft stick. Ask: “Draw each object, write or tell two properties of each, then circle one property they share.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs buttons, shells, and blocks; have them choose two traits, make a sorting rule, and record each group’s properties.
Show a pinecone and ask, “Which words describe what you observe, and which words are guesses?”
Play Mystery Bag: students feel one safe object without looking, name two properties, then choose it from three objects.
Compare classroom items made of metal, wood, plastic, and fabric, then discuss which properties make each material useful.
