What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students judge how much confidence a set of measurements deserves. They identify limits such as small samples, inconsistent methods, or coarse tools, then suggest specific ways to improve results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a data table or graph, students distinguish accuracy from precision and explain whether the evidence supports a claim. They propose an improvement tied to a specific weakness, such as calibrating tools or repeating trials.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat accuracy and precision as the same thing. They may assume repeated values are correct, ignore outliers without explanation, or think more decimal places always mean better data.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A 10.0 cm rod is measured as 9.2, 9.2, and 9.3 cm. Are the results accurate, precise, both, or neither? Name one improvement.”
