What Students Need to Do: Students collect the same measurement using different tools or procedures. They compare each result with a known value and use the size of the error to judge accuracy.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose a suitable measuring method, repeat trials, and record data with correct units. They identify the most accurate method using evidence, not the number of decimal places.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse accuracy with getting similar results across trials. They may assume digital tools, repeated trials, or more decimal places always produce accurate data.
How to Assess It: Give students a 50.0 mL reference and two data sets: 47, 50, 53 mL and 49.8, 50.1, 50.0 mL. Ask which method is more accurate and what evidence supports the choice.

Lesson moves

Have pairs measure a 100 g calibration mass with a triple-beam balance and digital scale, repeat three times, then compare absolute errors.
Show two thermometer data sets for a 100°C reference, then ask students to defend which method is more accurate and why.
Play Method Match: teams pair scenario cards with rulers, balances, cylinders, or sensors, then justify which choice should give the smallest error.
