What Students Need to Do: Students use more than one tool or procedure to measure the same quantity. They compare results with a known value and use evidence to decide which method is most accurate.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students plan repeated trials, use consistent units, and record measurements clearly. They identify the method closest to the known value and explain how tool choice or procedure affected the results.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse accuracy with precision, so they may trust repeated readings even when all are far from the known value. They may assume digital tools are always better or that one trial is enough.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: A 50.0 mL sample measures 47, 52, and 49 mL in a beaker, but 50, 50, and 49 mL in a graduated cylinder. Which method is more accurate, and what evidence supports your answer?

Lesson moves

Have groups measure a marked 25.0 cm strip with a ruler, tape measure, and phone app, repeat three times, then compare to the reference length.
Ask students to explain why three identical but wrong readings can be precise without being accurate.
Give teams cards showing repeated measurements and a known value; they race to rank methods from most to least accurate and justify choices.
Compare a kitchen thermometer with an ice-water reference, then decide whether it is reliable enough for checking cooked chicken.
