What Students Need to Do: Students compare data collected with different tools or procedures against a known or accepted value. They identify which method is most accurate and explain how tool choice, calibration, and technique affect results.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use evidence, such as measurement error or closeness to a reference value, to rank data collection methods. They can suggest a specific change that would improve accuracy.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse repeated results with accurate results. They may assume digital tools are always better or overlook errors from poor calibration, inconsistent technique, or limited tool resolution.
How to Assess It: Give students three measurements of a 25.0 cm object: 24.9 cm, 25.8 cm, and 26.1 cm, each from a different method. Ask them to choose the most accurate method and justify their choice.

Lesson moves

Have groups measure one desk with a ruler, meter stick, and tape measure, then compare each result with a teacher-verified length.
Ask students to write: Can repeated measurements be precise but inaccurate? Explain with numbers or a labeled sketch.
Give pairs method cards showing tools and procedures, then have them rank each set from most to least accurate and defend one ranking.
Compare counting pulse beats for 15 seconds and 60 seconds, then discuss which method gives a better resting heart rate estimate.
