What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve familiar problems by identifying what they know, choosing a strategy and tool, and checking whether the answer makes sense. They show their thinking with objects, pictures, numbers, words, or graphs and explain why their method works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a one-step problem, a student chooses a useful tool or representation, finds an accurate solution, and checks it against the situation. The student explains the steps with clear math words and can compare strategies.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab every number and add without deciding what the problem asks. They may treat a drawing or equation as decoration, choose tools without purpose, or give an answer without checking it.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Mia has 8 crayons and gets 5 more. How many now?” Ask them to use two representations and explain why the answer makes sense.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 14 counters and cups, then ask them to model two ways to share the counters and explain each model.
