What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a tool or strategy that fits the problem. They use it to solve, then tell why it was a good choice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently choose counters, a drawing, a number line, mental math, estimation, or technology to fit a problem. They solve accurately and explain why their choice helped.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use the same tool for every problem, even when it slows them down. They may treat an estimate as an exact answer or let technology replace their own thinking.
How to Assess It
- Give students 9 + 6 and 14 - 3. Ask them to choose a tool or strategy, solve each problem, and explain each choice.
