What Students Need to Do: Students show math ideas with objects, drawings, tally marks, ten-frames, numbers, and simple equations. They use these models to keep track of information and explain their thinking to others.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose a useful model, such as counters, a drawing, a ten-frame, or a number sentence. Their model matches the problem, includes clear labels, and helps them explain their thinking.
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw pictures that do not match the numbers or leave out labels. They may also copy a model without explaining what each part represents.
How to Assess It: Give students the prompt, “Show 7 birds with a drawing, a ten-frame, and a number sentence.” Ask them to explain how all three show 7.

Lesson moves

Give pairs 12 counters and ten-frames, then have them build and draw two different ways to show 8.
Ask students, “Which model shows 6 most clearly, and why?” using a drawing, tally marks, and a ten-frame.
Play Model Match by having students match cards showing quantities as pictures, numerals, tally marks, ten-frames, and equations.
Use a class snack count, then record the total with objects, a labeled picture, tally marks, and a number sentence.
