What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose or create a model that fits a mathematical idea. They organize information and add labels, numbers, words, or symbols so others can understand their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can show one mathematical idea with models, diagrams, tables, graphs, words, or equations. Their labels and explanations make each representation clear to another person.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw a picture that does not match the quantities or operation. They may leave out labels, units, titles, or scales, making the representation unclear.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A teacher packs 24 pencils into 6 equal groups. Show the situation in two labeled ways, then write one sentence connecting them.
