What Mastery Looks Like: Students create an accurate table, diagram, number line, graph, or equation for a problem. They label it clearly and explain how it shows their strategy and answer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw a picture that looks related but does not show the quantities or operations. They may omit labels, use inconsistent scales, or create an equation that does not match their model.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Six boxes hold 24 pencils each, and 18 pencils are used. Show two representations and explain how they connect.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs 48 counters and grid paper to model three-fourths of the set, sketch the model, and write a matching equation.
Ask, “Which best explains 2.5 plus 1.75: a number line, money model, or equation?” Have students defend their choice.
