What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show their thinking with numbers, drawings, objects, or words. They explain how they solved a problem and why their answer makes sense using clear math terms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student solves a problem, shows the steps with numbers, pictures, or objects, and explains the reasoning. The student uses words such as equal, add, subtract, more, fewer, and same correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give only an answer and leave out how they found it. They may use vague words like “that” or confuse terms such as more, fewer, equal, plus, and minus.
How to Assess It
- Give the prompt, “Solve 7 + 5. Draw or write your strategy, then explain why your answer makes sense using two math words.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters to solve 8 + 6, then have each student model and explain a different strategy to a partner.
Ask, “How do you know 12 is greater than 9?” Students write one sentence using greater than and because.
Play Explain or Fix: read a sample solution, and students earn a point by explaining it or correcting unclear math words.
Show two classroom supply bins and ask students to compare the amounts, record an equation, and explain which bin has more.
