What Students Need to Do
- Students communicate how they solved a problem and why their reasoning makes sense. They support their ideas with equations, models, examples, labels, and accurate math words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students clearly state a claim, show supporting work, and connect each step to their answer. They use accurate terms, labels, equations, and models when speaking or writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give only an answer or list steps without explaining why the steps work. They may use vague words such as “it” or misuse terms such as factor, product, and sum.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 36 × 4, then justify your answer using an equation, a labeled model, and two sentences with correct math terms.
