What Students Need to Do
- Students show their thinking with objects, drawings, numbers, or words. They explain why an answer makes sense using terms such as more, fewer, equal, add, and take away.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a simple problem, a student shows an idea with objects, a drawing, numbers, or words. The student explains the answer using accurate math terms and a clear reason.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give only an answer without showing or explaining their thinking. They may use vague words like “bigger” instead of more, longer, or greater.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “Show two ways to make 5. Draw or use counters, then explain how you know each way shows 5.”
