What Students Need to Do

Students communicate how they solved a problem using correct terms, symbols, diagrams, tables, or equations. They make a claim and support it with mathematical evidence another person can follow.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student labels representations, connects each step, and explains why a method works. The student uses accurate terms, answers questions, and replaces vague words with specific mathematical language.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a correct answer or equation is enough. They may list steps without explaining why they work, use vague words, or leave units and labels out.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Mia says 2.6 × 4 = 10.4. Is she correct? Use an equation, a labeled model, and two sentences to justify your answer.”
