What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students communicate how they solved a problem using correct terms, symbols, diagrams, tables, or equations. They make a claim and support it with mathematical evidence another person can follow.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student labels representations, connects each step, and explains why a method works. The student uses accurate terms, answers questions, and replaces vague words with specific mathematical language.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a correct answer or equation is enough. They may list steps without explaining why they work, use vague words, or leave units and labels out.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Mia says 2.6 × 4 = 10.4. Is she correct? Use an equation, a labeled model, and two sentences to justify your answer.”
