What Students Need to Do: Students present mathematical reasoning so another person can follow it. They use correct terms, symbols, units, and property names to support each claim or solution step.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students give a clear claim, show organized work, and connect each step to a definition, property, or known fact. Another student can follow the explanation without guessing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list calculations without explaining why each step works. They may misuse the equal sign, use vague words like "it," or name a property incorrectly.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Solve 3(x + 2) = 18, then explain and justify each step using property names and correct symbols. Check both the solution and reasoning.

Lesson moves

Give pairs algebra tiles to model 2(x + 3), then have them label and explain each move to another pair.
Ask students to write: "Which solution is correct, and what evidence proves it?" using two sample solutions with different reasoning.
Play Reasoning Relay, where teams add one justified step at a time to solve an equation posted on chart paper.
Have students compare two phone plans and write a recommendation supported by calculations, units, and a clear conclusion.
