What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use math to answer familiar questions about objects, money, time, sharing, and quantities. They decide what information matters, choose a way to solve, and connect the answer to the situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the question, choose useful information, and model it with objects, drawings, numbers, or equations. They solve accurately and explain what the answer means in the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add every set of numbers, even when the situation calls for taking away or comparing. They may give a number without a label or an answer that does not fit the situation.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 8 crayons and gives 3 away. Draw or write how you found how many remain, then label your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up a class store with play coins and priced items, then have students find totals and change for simple purchases.
Ask, “When did you use numbers outside school yesterday?” and have students draw and label one example.
Play Problem Sort by placing story cards under addition, subtraction, or not enough information headings.
Use a snack count to decide whether the class has enough crackers for each student to receive two.
