What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a real situation into numbers, diagrams, tables, or equations. They choose useful operations, solve, and interpret the result in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies relevant information and selects a suitable model or operation. The student calculates accurately, labels the answer, and explains why it makes sense for the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use every number given, choose an operation from a keyword, or ignore missing information. They may report an answer without units or accept an unreasonable result.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A club has $180 for shirts costing $14 each and must save $20 for shipping. How many shirts can it buy?” Require an equation, answer, units, and reasonableness check.
