Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use math to solve situations they might meet at home, school, or in the community. They decide what information matters, choose a strategy, and explain the answer in context.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students select useful information and choose a fitting operation, drawing, table, or equation. They calculate accurately, label the answer, and check whether it makes sense in the situation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose an operation from a keyword without thinking about the situation. They may use every number given, omit units, or accept an answer that does not make sense.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “A class has 6 tables with 4 students at each table. Three students leave. How many remain? Show and explain your work.”

Lesson moves

Set up a classroom store with price cards and play money; students choose two items, find the total, and check their budget.
Ask, “Our class has 28 snack bags packed equally into 4 boxes. What math should we use, and why?”
Play a scenario sort where teams match short problem cards to addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, then solve one card.
Give students a bus chart with 8 rows of 4 seats; have them decide whether 29 students and 3 adults fit.
