What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use counting, comparing, sorting, shapes, or measurement to solve familiar problems. They show their thinking with objects, pictures, numbers, or spoken explanations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the math in a familiar situation and choose a useful strategy, such as counting, sorting, comparing, or measuring. They use objects or drawings and explain how their answer fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a number without showing what it represents. They may choose an operation or counting strategy that does not match the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “There are 4 children and 3 apples. Draw a way to share the apples, then explain your choice.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 10 counters and three toy plates, then ask them to share the counters fairly and explain any leftovers.
Ask, “How could math help us decide whether our class has enough chairs for everyone?”
