What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of a problem, decide on a plan, and find a solution. They explain their thinking and check whether the answer is reasonable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can choose a useful strategy, such as drawing, acting out, or writing an equation. The student finds the answer, explains the steps, and checks that the answer fits the story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab every number and add without thinking about the question. They may give an answer without explaining it or checking whether it makes sense.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “There are 7 birds. 3 fly away. How many remain? Draw or write your plan, solve, and explain why your answer makes sense.”
