What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out what a problem is asking and which information will help. They choose a strategy, solve, explain their thinking, and check whether the answer is reasonable.

- Students identify the useful information and choose a strategy that fits the problem. They find an accurate answer, explain their steps with words or models, and check whether the answer makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab the numbers and add without deciding what the question asks. They may stop after finding an answer, skip explaining their strategy, or accept an unreasonable result.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A box has 28 red crayons and 15 blue crayons. How many crayons are there?” Ask students to plan, solve, explain, and check.
