What Students Need to Do
- Students sort useful information from extra details and decide what the problem asks. They choose a strategy, solve, explain why it works, and check whether the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify what is known and what must be found. They choose and carry out a sensible strategy, explain their reasoning, and check that the answer fits the problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation just because they see certain numbers. They may list steps without explaining why the strategy works. Some stop after calculating and never check whether the answer fits the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Eight notebooks cost $2.75 each. Is $25 enough?” Students must show a plan, solve, justify, and check reasonableness.
