What Students Need to Do
- Students sort out what is known, what is being asked, and which information matters. They choose a strategy, solve, explain their reasoning, and check whether the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify useful information, choose an efficient approach, and carry it through accurately. They explain why the approach works and check the answer using estimation, units, or another method.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab every number in the problem and calculate without deciding what the question asks. They may stop after finding an answer, skip an explanation, or accept an unreasonable result.
How to Assess It
- Give one multistep problem and ask students to show their plan, solution, explanation, and one reasonableness check. Score each part with a simple four-item checklist.
