What Students Need to Do
- Students sort out what they know, what they need to find, and which strategy fits. They solve, explain their reasoning, and check whether the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the question, selects a workable strategy, and calculates accurately. The student explains the steps and uses estimation, another method, or context to check the answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab every number and compute without deciding what the question asks. They may treat an answer as finished without checking the operation, units, or size. Some think only one strategy can be correct.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A library has 238 fiction books and 176 nonfiction books. Explain how you found the total and how you checked it.”
