What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of a math story, decide what to try, and use objects, drawings, or numbers to solve it. They explain their answer and check whether it fits the story.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify what is known and what needs to be found. The student chooses a workable strategy, gets a sensible answer, and explains how a model supports it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine every number they see without considering the story. They may think there is only one way to solve, or stop after finding an answer without checking it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Lena has 3 blocks and gets 2 more. How many blocks does she have now?” Ask students to solve, explain, and check.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs five counters and ask them to show two ways to put five bears into two caves, then explain each solution.
Ask, “Sam says four apples plus one apple equals six. How could we check his answer, and what should we tell him?”
Play Strategy Match: students pair picture-problem cards with counters, drawings, acting out, or ten-frames, then explain each choice.
At snack time, ask students to share eight crackers between two plates, solve the problem, and check that all crackers are used.
