What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students handle books and follow print from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page. They connect spoken words to letter sequences, notice spaces, name letters, and identify book parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can track words while an adult reads and show where one word ends and another begins. The student names uppercase and lowercase letters and locates the front cover, back cover, and title page.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may track pictures instead of print, move across a page in the wrong direction, or treat a whole sentence as one word. They may confuse a book's cover with its title page.
How to Assess It
- Give the student a simple book and one printed sentence. Ask the student to identify book parts, track the sentence, point to spaces, and name selected letters.

Ways to Teach It

Ask, ‘How does a reader know where to start, where to move next, and when to turn the page?’
Play Print Feature Hunt for covers, title pages, spaces, uppercase letters, and lowercase letters.
Examine a classroom sign and track its words in order before using the sign's directions.
