Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students track printed words from left to right, move from the top line downward, and turn pages in order. They connect pointing with the direction of reading.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student begins at the correct word, sweeps across each line, returns to the next line, and continues page by page. Tracking stays with the shared text.
Common Misconceptions: Students may follow pictures instead of words or move right to left. They may skip lines, start in the middle, or turn pages out of order.
How to Assess It: Give the student a familiar big-print book. Ask them to point where reading starts and track two lines before turning the page.

Lesson moves

Use a pointer to track words across enlarged text and practice the return sweep to the next line.
Ask students where their eyes and finger go after reaching the end of a line.
Play Reading Direction Follow-the-Leader on sentence strips and simple pages.
Track words on a classroom chart, schedule, or posted morning message.
