What Students Need to Do
- Students use transitional words and phrases to control the sequence of narrative events. Transitions clarify movement through time, place, or connected actions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses varied transitions exactly where readers need guidance. The sequence stays clear through shifts between events without repetitive linking words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use first, next, and last mechanically or place a transition that signals the wrong relationship. They may shift time or place without warning.
How to Assess It
- Provide five events with one time jump and one location change. Ask students to write a paragraph using transitions that make both shifts clear.
