What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use varied transitional words, phrases, and clauses to manage narrative events. Their choices signal time, sequence, and relationships among actions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student guides readers smoothly through immediate actions, time jumps, and simultaneous events. Transitions vary and fit the exact relationship between events.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat then or use sophisticated transitions inaccurately. They may insert a time jump or scene change without enough guidance.

How to Assess It

Give six events containing a flashback and two simultaneous actions. Ask students to connect them using at least four varied transitions or clauses.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange event cards and choose transition strips that accurately signal sequence, overlap, and time shifts.

  2. Ask students how while, moments later, and years before create different event relationships.

  3. Play transition challenge by replacing repeated connectors without changing the narrative timeline.

  4. Write a clear account of a multi-step school event using transitions for time and overlapping actions.
