What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students understand that spaces separate words in print. They use spaces to count and identify individual words in a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student points to each printed word once and identifies the blank spaces between words. The student can rebuild a short sentence with clear separation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count letters or syllables instead of printed words. They may treat punctuation or a large internal letter space as a word boundary.
How to Assess It
- Show a four-word sentence. Ask the student to point to each word, count the words, and mark every space.
