What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify where a printed sentence begins and ends. They notice its first word, opening capital letter, and ending punctuation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to one complete sentence in print and name its beginning and ending features. The student can rebuild a scrambled sentence with the first word, capitalization, and ending mark in the right places.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each printed line as a sentence or overlook the punctuation that marks its end. They may capitalize every word or rely on line breaks instead of sentence features.
How to Assess It
- Give the student a printed sentence with no capital or ending mark. Ask the student to correct it and explain how the changes show a complete sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Cut a sentence into word cards; students arrange it and place capital and ending-punctuation cards.
Display two sentences and ask, ‘How can a reader tell where each sentence starts and stops?’
Play Sentence Feature Hunt by circling first words, boxing capitals, and underlining ending marks in a short text.
Inspect a classroom rule poster and identify how sentence features make each rule easier to read.
