What Students Need to Do: Students recognize where a sentence begins and ends. They identify the first word, capital letter, spacing, and ending punctuation as sentence features.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student points to the first word, its capital letter, and the ending mark in print. The student distinguishes one complete printed sentence from nearby text.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat each line as a separate sentence. They may identify any capital letter or punctuation mark instead of the sentence boundaries.
How to Assess It: Show two printed sentences. Ask students to point to each first word, capital letter, and ending punctuation mark.
