What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use words and ideas in the same sentence to infer an unfamiliar or multiple-meaning word. They check which possible meaning makes the sentence sensible.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student points to a specific context clue and states a meaning supported by it. The student rereads the sentence with that meaning and revises if it no longer makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the topic without using the actual sentence. They may identify a nearby word as a clue even when it does not help narrow the meaning.

How to Assess It

Show the sentence, ‘Maya placed the pitcher beside the cups.’ Ask what pitcher means, which words help, and how the student checked.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cover target words in sentence strips; students predict each word from context, reveal it, and explain the clues.

  2. Ask, ‘What does the word mean here, and which other sentence word provides the strongest clue?’

  3. Play Meaning Check by testing two possible definitions in a sentence and rejecting the one that breaks meaning.

  4. Read a recipe direction and use sentence clues to determine an unfamiliar action word before following it.
