What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a sentence or paragraph's overall meaning and a word's grammatical position or function to infer meaning. They test possible definitions against both kinds of context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies semantic clues and correctly names the target word's likely function. The student rejects definitions that fit the topic but fail the sentence grammar or paragraph logic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on the general topic and ignore the sentence structure. They may confuse a word's position with its function or choose a familiar meaning from the wrong part of speech.
How to Assess It
- Give students a paragraph with a multiple-meaning target word. Ask them to identify its function, infer the meaning, and explain two supporting clues.
