What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students infer word meaning from the overall sense of a sentence or paragraph and the word's position or grammatical function. They evaluate possible meanings against both constraints.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student explains how paragraph logic narrows the concept and how sentence function narrows the word form. The selected meaning satisfies both clues and survives rereading.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a definition that fits the topic but not the syntax. They may label a word's part of speech from its ending alone or ignore a meaning shift across contexts.
How to Assess It
- Give students a paragraph containing a multiple-meaning word. Ask them to identify its function, define it in context, and eliminate one plausible alternative.

Ways to Teach It
Use a two-column chart for paragraph logic and sentence function, then combine the evidence into one definition.
Ask, ‘Which meaning fits both the author's idea and the grammatical job this word performs?’
Play Double Fit by accepting only definitions that work semantically and grammatically in the original sentence.
Analyze a legal or scientific sentence where a familiar word carries a specialized contextual meaning.
