What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use the overall meaning of a sentence, paragraph, or full text and a word's grammatical function to infer meaning. They account for how meaning may shift across contexts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies local and broader contextual evidence and the target word's part of speech. The selected meaning fits the sentence structure, the paragraph logic, and the text's larger purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a definition that works locally but conflicts with the full text. They may ignore grammatical function or assume a familiar word carries its everyday meaning in specialized discourse.
How to Assess It
- Give students a paragraph where a familiar word has a specialized meaning. Ask them to define it and explain sentence, paragraph, and grammatical clues.

Ways to Teach It
Annotate sentence, paragraph, full-text, and grammatical clues in separate colors, then synthesize them into a precise definition.
Ask, ‘Which meaning survives every level of context, and which tempting definition fails the larger text?’
Play Context Zoom by revealing sentence, paragraph, and text clues in stages and revising definitions after each reveal.
Analyze a familiar word used technically in a legal, scientific, or historical source.
